Studying Dallapiccola’s early life, we find the origins of many significant subjects of his creative work, including the motifs which he embodied in his art throughouthis life until his last great opera “Ulisses.” These motifs include the picturesque Mediterranean, various meditations on human fate and freedom, popular and folkloric poetic images, and sincere religious sentiment expressed in "simple" folk shapes, which are a fundamental aspect of Dallapiccola’s world view.
