The Image of the Trumpet in the Musical and Performing Culture of the First Half of the 20th Century (Professional Period) V.N. Manuilov The purpose of this article, which is a continuation of the previously started topic, is to provide an overview of the general trends of the new stage in the development of American trumpet performance (the last decade of the 19th – fi rst half of the 20th century). The author proposes an internal periodization of this stage, conditioned by the historical stages of the state development. The main forms of orchestral performance, within which solo trumpet performance originated, are considered. The importance of various types of orchestras for the popularization of brass performance, as well as the role of professional groups in the process of crystallization of solo performance culture are emphasized. The importance of a new stylistic direction – jazz for the further formation of performance techniques and the role of interpenetration of performance principles – academic and jazz – are noted. The work provides an overview and brief analysis of the importance of the activities and performance appearance of some individuals of outstanding trumpeters of this stage – A. Whitcomb, G. Heim, J. Mager, G. Clark. Based on the presented historical facts and analytical generalizations, it is concluded that at the professional stage of development, trumpet performance in the USA is experiencing an active phase. The accumulated performing experience of American musicians, the inheritance and deep assimilation of the traditions of European performing schools (German, French), as well as the growth of general musical culture become the basis for the formation of such an independent phenomenon as the American school of trumpet playing, represented by a galaxy of outstanding performers with an individual performing style.
