Demchenko The institutionalization of musical educational institutions has come a long way, starting in the XVI century in Italy and then in modern forms since the end of the XVIII century in France and a number of other foreign countries, and since 1862 in Russia. To date, a widely branched network of such institutions has developed in our country, which, in addition to conservatories, consists of music and pedagogical institutes, art institutes, cultural institutes, which makes Russia undoubtedly a world leader in terms of the diversity of institutionalization of forms of musical education. Conservatories in this area retain an unquestionably dominant position both quantitatively and in terms of their importance for the fi eld of art education in general. They have established a fairly solid canon both in the list of music departments and faculties formed on their basis. An extremely important factor in the specifi cation of music education is the extremely long-term and time-consuming process of acquiring professionalism, and carried out mainly in the forms of individual training. Another important resource for the institutionalization of Russian conservatories is that they are distinguished by a very wide range of various concert and educational functions. Finally, the special prerogative of music universities is related to their scientifi c activities, which form the main basis for the development of Russian musicology. And it is noteworthy that it is the conservative musicology that acts today as the vanguard of the institutionalization of that new scientifi c direction, which is called universal art studies.
