Music-Theoretical Teaching in the Treatises of Safiaddin Urmavi, Abdulgadir Maraghi, and Mir Mohsun Nawwab |
L.K. Gurbanova
The article presents a brief overview of the ways of development of musical theoretical thought in the East from the eighth to the nineteenth century. In many respects, they predetermined the formation of traditional genres. Following the historical classifi cation of the researcher Gultekin Shamilli, the main provisions of the teachings of al-Kindi and al-Farabi are touched upon. The scientifi c positions of the most prominent scholars of this period, Safiaddin Urmavi and Abdulhadir Maraghi, are analyzed in more detail. Their studies influenced not only the Oriental theory but also, in particular, the development of the art of maqamat. Their treatises "Kitab al-advar" ("The Book of Cycles") and "Djame al-alhan" ("The Collection of Melodies") are regarded as fundamental ones. The latter is characterized by the study of Azerbaijani musician and encyclopedist Mir Mohsun Navvab. His treatise "Vuzuh ul-argam" is the first musical study, written in Azerbaijani language and directly based on local traditions. Subsequently, Uzeyir Hajibeyov, the founder of the Azerbaijani national school, took the works of the considered thinkers into account.
