Sonata for Cello and Piano, op. 65 Frederic Chopin in the Prism of Research Concepts and Performing Interpretation |
Yu Yalong
The article is devoted to one of the later works of Frederic Chopin - Sonata for cello and piano, op. 65. In the composer’s creative heritage, this opus stands out for the timbre-instrumental solution of the cycle, however, interest in the voice of the cello manifested itself in the work of F. Chopin at the turn of 1820–1830; then the composer created several chamber instrumental ensembles with the participation of the cello. The article examines various works in the context of the composer’s style and in the light of the development of the cello sonata genre. Unfortunately, sometimes the criticism was unfair. The work is not so popular among musicians and the public (partly due to the unknown). However, it is fraught with melodic, rhythmic, genre and polyphonic variety. The author of the article made an attempt to analyze the main themes of the four parts of the sonata for their multidimensionality, based on various elements: Chopin masterfully combines the principles of the sonata-symphonic cycle with romantic imagery, the melodiousness of lyric themes with counterpoint technique, concludes different genres in one theme (march, chorale, mazurka), creates polyrhythmic overlays of textured layers. The above makes this sonata very interesting for a performing interpretation, which should reveal the peculiarities of its content.
Keywords: Frederic Chopin, romanticism, sonata, cello, chamber instrumental genre, interpretation.
