"Macrocosmos III" and "Macrocosmos IV" by George Crumb: contemplation of the nature of the Cosmos and Eternity |
V.O. Petrov, Yu.V. Markina
One of the brightest American composers of the second half of the twentieth century is George Crumb (b. 1929). His music is a special philosophical world. Cycles occupy a special place in Crumb’s work. Some of them, which are complete, performed separately, are combined into supercycles. It is noteworthy that the composer unites a number of opuses that are not similar in performing composition into supercycles, provided with a common name. "Macrocosmos" is one of those. The article examines the figurative drama of the last two cycles of this supercycle – "Macrocosmos III" and "Macrocosmos IV". The previous two cycles were the basis of the analysis in an article presented in the first issue of Music and Time magazine for 2021. In general, a single dramatic line is traced in the supercycle: from the birth of humanity to the recognition of Eternity as the only space that does not have the finitude of being.
Keywords: George Crumb, contemporary composition, postmodernism in music, "Macrocosmos", aesthetics of a musical piece.
