Art as Confession and Preaching: Gogol’s «Echo» in the Choral Work of G.P. Dmitriev |
S.V. Kekova, Y.O. Smoktiy
The attempt has been made to draw parallels in understanding the concept of art by N.V. Gogol and the contemporary composer G.P. Dmitriev, who created an eleven-part choral cycle for a reader and a mixed choir "Testament of Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol" (1997). As a literary source, the composer refers to the writer's spiritual prose, supplementing it with canonical Orthodox texts. The article shows that the introduction of canonical texts into the libretto demonstrates G.P. Dmitriev’s deep insight of N.V. Gogol’s carefully crafted art concept as a religious sermon. To reveal N.V. Gogol’s concept intention, the composer uses a performer who is very unusual for choral art - a reader and a mixed choir, which gives the composition a paraliturgical form. The concept of art by N.V. Gogol becomes the concept of the composer G.P. Dmitriev.
Keywords: the concept of art by N.V. Gogol, stages of the writer's spiritual development, choral performance, G.P. Dmitriev. choral cycle «Testament of Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol».
