Teaching Elementary Harmony to Adults from the Ground Up

The relevance of the research is characterized by the fact that the problem of teaching the discipline «harmony» at the elementary level to adults from scratch is a poorly developed area of music pedagogy. The logical apparatus of the research is based on a generalizing-theoretical approach, moving from private pedagogical findings to building an algorithm of pedagogical activity in this direction. The subject of the study is an intensive, accelerated study of harmony through playing the piano, on the transfer of the desired knowledge, skills and abilities «from hand to hand» before the transition of students to musical notation. The hypothesis of the study is to justify an alternative method of teaching elementary harmony. The teacher focuses on the adult category of students, interesting for her musical material. The concepts and terms of the discipline «harmony» are initially separated from the fundamental concepts of tonal functionality. As a result, there is a situation of mutual intersection of the practical orientation of the process with the scientific and theoretical foundations of harmony. As part of the formation of a new method of studying harmony, we proposed the process of learning the material not «from chords to music» (as in most cases is customary), but, on the contrary, from a musical piece to the concept of «chord». It is essential to choose an essay that can «pleasantly surprise» the student and, at the same time, be transparent in design (construction of the form). Thus, an innovative approach, which has the character of constant practical music making, leads to an increase in the effectiveness of training and motivation in the study of harmony.
