Music and Time Annotation << Back Music by Chekhov’s "The Seagull" V.A. Tsyrkov When you read The Seagull, there is a feeling of some hidden meaning. Deciphering it is as difficult as explaining music in words, but not hearing it is playing blindly. The playwright Chekhov's innovation is not fully comprehended, and "The Seagull", perhaps, is precisely the play that could become the key to understanding his work. Perhaps, in no other play by Chekhov does the second – a symbolic plan – appear so clearly, which creates a mystical sensation of parallel action. This is a cosmic drama that is comedic in real society. But mysticism is not an end in itself, but only a means that should help displace false dramatic tendencies outside the genre. Chekhov loves symbolism, but carefully disguises it in the clothes of a realistic theater. He took this principle, it seems, from life itself. Comedic situations "The Seagull" often arise on the verge of inconsistency of the severity of the proposed circumstances with the real state of affairs. The main thing is to understand the nature of the conflict, which gives rise to the genre, and therefore the music.
