Chance music in the late works of D. Millaud |
V.V. Zhalnin
Late works of Darius Millaud marked interest in new composer techniques and, above all, in chance music. For the first time, aleatoric ideas were embodied in a number of experimental opuses of the 1920s, which the composer called “cadences”. Millaud returned to this idea again in the 1950s and early 1960s. Since that time, aleatory music appears in his compositions in the form of “aleatoric counterpoint”, combining simultaneously two different principles of horizontal structuring of musical time. The article discusses Septet op.408, Musique Pour Graz op.429, Musique pour Ars nova Op. 432 – the late works of Millaud, in which the aleatory parts are combined vertically with fixed elements of musical text, creating an unusual pattern of polyphony of the layers.
Keywords: Darius Milhaud, chance music, polyphony of layers, aleatoric counterpoint, septet.
