«Froth on the Daydream» by Edison Denisov in the mirror of directing productions |

The article is devoted to a comparative analysis of Edison Denisov’s opera «Froth on the Daydream» (French: «L’Ecume des jours») of Boris Vian’s novel of the same name, performed at the Paris National Theater of Comic Opera (1986), the Perm Academic Tchaikovsky Theater (1989) and the Stuttgart Opera (2012). The subject of reflection of the author are questions of stage dramaturgy, costume, scenery, mise en scenes, interpretations of a number of stage images. The essence of the fundamental differences in the producer’s approaches is due to the varying degree of accentuation of the lyrical line, which is the central theme of the textual source, and Denisov’s opera. While the Parisian and Permian productions absolutize the lyric category, refusing sideline dramaturgy and resorting to the reduction of the score, the Stuttgart version retains the author’s text, paying more attention to the background of the love story and immersing the lyrical heroes in the context of destruction, the grotesque and the absurd.
