Music and Time Annotation << Back Problems of Musical Phrasing Y.A. Bogdanov The article discusses general principles of building a musical phrase and the specificity of their use in piano performance. The art of phrasing, which forms the basis of expressive playing, is often disregarded in the methodological literature for pianists. Meanwhile, defining the boundaries of phrases, intonational curves and climaxes is not an easy task, since they are not indicated in the musical score. From the very beginning of music education, students should develop a focus on the intonational structure of the phrase and the types of musical articulation. Relying on accumulated pedagogical and performing experience, author shows a way from the so-called intuitive perception of a phrase through detailed analysis of its intonational structure to finding universal laws. Examples from the classical piano repertoire are given to illustrate how the structure of a musical phrase is determined by pitch, rhythm and harmony. The article formulates the basic laws of phrasing and describes their interaction. Knowing these rules of phrasing and applying them when learning a new piece will be a valuable help for pianists in their performing practice.
