The Genre of a Mass in Context of Anton Bruckner’s Creative Legacy |
V.P. Konnov
This article dedicated to Anton Bruckner’s most important and large liturgical oeuvres – three great masses, which have a preestablished concept as well as his mature symphonies from Third to Ninth. It manifests itself through the concentric architectonics of musical design which consists of two theme arches thrown over the Credo. In his symphonies, Bruckner converted the concentric pattern of his masses into a through composition scheme derived from Beethoven’s Ninth but without choral Finale. However, Bruckner’s three masses and the The Deum continued the tradition of the choral Finale of the Ninth and the Missa solemnis by Beethoven in a trend traced by a mystical final scene of Goethe’s Faust (second Teil).
Keywords: pre-established musical design, architectonics of musical form, a pattern of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, genres of Requiem and Passion, Easter liturgy, mystical final scene of Goethe’s Faust (second Teil).
