Music and Time Annotation << Back
To the Perfect Humanity
through Music: Opera
Projects by K. Stockhausen,
K. Goeyvaerts and L. Nono |
A.V. Titova
The object of attention of this article are the most significant and original musical and stage projects of the second half of the
XX century – "Aquarius" by Karel Goeyvaerts, "Light" by Karlheinz Stockhausen and "Prometheus" by Luigi Nono. Becoming a kind
of final point in the work of each composer, these opuses synthesized key ideas and innovations of contemporary musical art. The
author of the article compares these works and reveals their relationship at different levels. Common features include a plotless
libretto basis, textual multicomponent, poly-lingualism, reliance on a modular or fragmentary composition, an "open form", aspiration
for infinity, a philosophical-aesthetic concept that emphasizes the mythological-mysterious essence of art, the expansion of the
boundaries of theatrical and stage space, and others. Creating new sound worlds from the "pure board", Goeyvaerts, Stockhausen
and Nono were convinced that their music could transform humanity.
Keywords: Karel Goeyvaerts, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Luigi Nono, modern opera, opera project, «Licht», «Aquarius», «Prometeo».
