The Masterpiece of the Renaissance Music – T. L. de Victoria’s Offi cium Hebdomadae Sanctae (1585) |

This article dedicated to the outstanding monument of spanish musical Renaissance – Officium Hebdomadae Sanctae (Rome, 1585) of Tomás Luis de Victoria, who first placed in one edition all polyphonic settings for Holy Week’s Liturgia of the Hours. The aim of the research is to characterize the unique features of the collection (including national specificity) which determined it’s place in the musical and historical context of the age. Comparative analysis of the manuscript and the published in 1585 version of the Lamentations makes clear that with his redactions composer was striving hard to meet the reformed Church’s requirements for liturgical works. Special attention is given to biographical situation accompanied the Officium Hebdomadae Sanctae, which Victoria had edited immediately before his resettlement in Spain. This paper also describes the main trends of academic discussion on the Lamentations, examines the problem of manuscript’s dating and displays results of the textological research.
