Music and Time Annotation << Back The Hidden Image of «Tears» in «Die Toteninsel» of A. Beklin – S.V. Rachmaninov M.A. Chershintseva The presented article continues a cycle of articles devoted to the hidden symbolical meanings of «Die Toteninsel» A. Beklin – S.V. Rachmaninov, in the intricate polysemy of these texts connected with archetypic and mythological bases of a plot, allegoricalness of images of «posthumous travel», their cultural demand, diversity of interpretations. Comparing picturesque and musical options of a plot of «Island of the Dead», we assume that behind external allegoricalness (sound pictorialism, «significance» by Rachmaninov, symbolical «realism» by Beklin) more profound questions concerning symbolical aspects of «travel beyond the grave», images of «dream-death», «water», «castle», «helmsman», mysterious «islands», «the wandering soul». Many of them were considered by us in the previous articles. In this article we make an attempt to detect the hidden image of «tears», connected with emotional aspect of a musical embodiment of a plot of S.V. Rachmaninov’s «Island of the Dead», and with variety of possible art and philosophical interpretations of A. Beklin’s «Die Toteninsel». «Tears» – a capacious image of a difficult complex of the psychological reactions connected with a condition of the melancholy, undoubtedly provoked by a plot «Island…». The melancholy in its philosophical sense embodied in an art form opens a number of important analogies in an all-symbolical context of the main questions of the declared subject.
