Hermeneutical Analysis of Binary Structures
in G. Ustvolskaya’s Fourth Symphony |

In this article, through the prism of binary optics structurally-semantic organization of musical text of the Fourth Symphony by
G. Ustvolskaya is considered. Hermeneutical analysis of identified binary structures is held which includes semantic reception
and symbolic-value interpretation of binary oppositions. Purpose of the analysis is to show how through using binary interactions
system spiritual and existential content of the Fourth Symphony’s music is embodied. The main artistic theme of the symphony is
defined: anticipation of the man in the face of Eternity. It is suggested that this existential dimension of the symphony’s content
is representative to spiritual realism as that of G. Ustvolskaya’s method and style. Bipolar structure of the Fourth Symphony’s art
world is revealed. It is shown that this structure is built on antinomy pulse between the sphere of positive and negative imagery,
resting upon «vocal – instrumental» semantic antithesis. Dramatic peculiarities of the Fourth Symphony are also noted. The modes
of binary oppositions’ dramatic interaction are highlighted. Phenomenon of binary oppositions deformation is indicated, and on
specific examples the shapes of their deformations are shown. Binary relations typology is offered. Based on the hermeneutical
analysis conclusion is made that the system of binary interactions in the structural-semantic organization of the Fourth Symphony’s
musical text is one of the most important factors of inline meaning making. The main conclusion is as follows: on the figurativesense
and value-symbolic level, system of binary interactions is a system of spiritual «anti-sensations» forming by themselves
the symphony’s existential space in which antinomies of spiritual freedom and lack of freedom, faith and disbelief, pulsate, these
antinomies comprehended in the light of the world-viwe of G. Ustvolskaya.
