Music and Time Annotation << Back Piano Works of Edison Denisov: Expanding Sound Space of the Instrument N. Gataullina The article explores the phenomenon of Edison Denisov’s «new sound contemplation». The notations «colour» and «sonority» are not only associated with the most refined techniques of the master of symphony’s orchestral writings, they are becoming terminus a quo when analyzing his works. The author shows the main parameters of the Denisov’s piano thinking, analyses piano space, being understood by the composer as a live, flexible background with certain dimensions and outside limits, capable of splitting and co-existing in different layers simultaneously. The analysis of piano works (Signs on White, Dots and Lines, Reflections, etc.) brings the author to a conclusion that the composer creates original dynamically developing sonorant compositions, involving a new kind of musical texture, drawing upon original ways and techniques of «new sonorities».
