Analysis of Concert Performance by M.D. Mikhaylov
of Ruslan’s Aria «Oh, a Field, a Field…» |

The article presents the analysis of the concert version of interpretation by M.D. Mikhailov of Ruslan’s aria «Oh, a field, a field…» from M.I. Glinka’s opera «Ruslan and Lyudmila». In the basis of Mikhailov’s treatment of the image of Ruslan there are traditions, distinctive for performance of Russian national lingering song abounding with lyrical, dramatic intonations. A collation of the vocal reading of the famous bass arias with composer text based on the following parameters: code of pitch, tempo, rhythm pattern, speakers, extra linguistics, verbal code. Based on the analysis of Mikhailov’s interpretative style, we show that the unique chamber version of Ruslan’s aria is singer’s rejection from set design, makeup, costume, which are components of the dramatic action. Performer resorts only to vocal and technical equipment of voice, considering it as one of the most important means of expression in the emotional transfer of characteristics of the hero. In the article we do conclusions about the features of the timbre changes of singer's voice.
