Connotations of Musical Text
|
I. Stogniy
The paper deals with connotations in semantic organization of music which are little-studied in musicology. In contrast to the denotations which determine the typical acceptances, the connotations represent an additional, superstructural acceptances and are characterized by latency (hidden meaning). Infinite number of the ways of semantic organization of music text imply many kinds of connotations. They can be realized in music form, genre, intonation, tonality. They can have its own subject or can formed a counterpoint line within the general subject being pro or con of it. The metaphorical, mythopoetical and intertextual properties of music form the nutrient medium for connotations. The connotations are characterized by addressing to other texts and its style, genre, figurative and structural elements. The metaphorical realizations of connotations are shown through the example of Shostakovich’s Preludes and P. Hindemit’s work «Boston» from the piano suite «1922». The mythopoetical and intertextual connotations are analyzed through the example of V. Ryabov’s piano compositions – the cycle «The Four Gospels» and Fantasia c-moll in memory of M. Yudina. There are connotations in any music text but they are typical for the 20th century culture.
