Music and Time Annotation << Back Russian Musical Avantgarde of the Early Twentieth Century. Essay One A.I. Demchenko The first essay in this diptych of materials on the Russian musical avantgarde of the early 20th century discusses the seemingly modest number of representatives of this movement, offset by the impressive contribution to the radical renewal of world music of this period in the works of such outstanding figures as the late Scriabin, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, and early Shostakovich. From this perspective, the creative initiatives of Stravinsky and Prokofiev are primarily assessed, with their characteristic radical transformation of the entire stylistic system, emphasizing such qualities as dynamism and the associated pressure of forceful influences.
