S.I. Taneyev's "Concert Suite":
on the Transformation
of the Violin Concerto Genre |
O.V. Chepizhnaya
The article examines the «Concert Suite for Violin and Orchestra» by S.I. Taneyev (1908–1909) in the aspect of the evolution of the violin
concerto genre. The article examines the history of the creation of the work in the context of the development of the violin concerto in Russia at
the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and Taneyev's concerto work in general, and emphasizes the influence of Leopold Auer and his performing
school. The article identifies the composer's main methods of work, which include the blending of musical eras and their refraction through the
lens of modernity, the extensive use of leitmotifs and leitintonations, multi-level polyphonic technique, and the coloristic interpretation of the solo
violin part. The article concludes that despite the composer's initial intention to depart from the traditional concerto genre the Suite embodies its
main characteristics. These include the close interconnection between the movements, the virtuosity and multifaceted imagery of the violin's part,
and the interaction between the soloist and the orchestra based on the principles of concerto performance.
