Music and Time Annotation << Back The Relationship Between Russian Pop Music and Cinema at the Turn of the 19th and 20th Centuries N.S. Semenova This article examines the relationship between Russian pop music and cinema at the turn of the 20th century. It explores the influence of historical events of that time on the emergence of cinema and its development within the performing arts. The turn of the 19th and 20th centuries was characterized by numerous social changes, rationalization, and the increasing publicity of everyday life. This was refl ected in leisure and entertainment. The phenomenon of divertissement demonstrates the existence of a socalled intermediate form of performance culture, emerging at the intersection of different arts, old and new. This intermediate form has existed on stage for a long time, passing from one era to another. A study of the relationship between Russian pop music and cinema will help answer many questions facing music and filmmakers today.
