Harmony: on the Way
to the Art of Arrangement |

The harmony course in the training of young musicians has cardinal importance, since, comprehensively exploring the properties of the musical
texture, it opens up prospects for the fruitful implementation of all types of activities – from performing and scientific activities to multifaceted
arranging work with primary sources.
However, in its current traditional form, the harmony course ceases to fully perform its many functions. This is due to distortions in its planning,
underestimation of the broad historical context, as well as the shift of pedagogical efforts towards unnecessary complication of harmonic tasks,
attempts to completely eradicate «mistakes», strict observance of numerous «rules» and prohibitions. And all this is due to the loss of more
important skills: creating the logical and semantic integrity of the solved sample, caring about the meaningful and dramatic role of voices, the
formation of artistically valuable musical fragments.
For arranging activities, the current orientation of the harmony course in the secondary and even in the high education is obviously unacceptable,
since it does not help, but actively hinders achieving perfection in this time-demanded art.
