«From me Flows What you Call Тime»
by Toru Takemitsu: Interpretation of the Cycle,
Orchestra, Form, Types of Material |
N.N. Alekseeva
The article analyzes the composition «From me flows what you call Time» by Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu and emphasizes the
uniqueness of the approach to combining Eastern and Western musical traditions. The sources and numerical symbolism of the composition,
the composition of the orchestra, and the features of the percussion group are considered. For the fi rst time, an analysis of the types of acoustic
material used by Takemitsu (the theme of Time, vertical aggregates, sonorous-geometric fi gures) is presented, which results in the multi-layered
sound of the piece. The work uses elements of musical hermeneutics (the problem of interpretation and understanding of the composition) and
phenomenology (structural and musical aspects of the analysis). The conclusions emphasize the focus on a lively dialogue between different
traditions, characteristic of Takemitsu's work. The depth of the composer's philosophical and aesthetic ideas overcomes cultural barriers and
creates a new aesthetic space. The coordination of various musical and extra-musical levels of the composition, determined by numerical
symbolism, and the unifi cation of the thirteen sections of the composition “From me flows what you call Time” by the diversity of acoustic sound
are considered.
