Krasko The article examines two rhapsodies for violin and piano (1928) by Bela Bartok, embodying all the main methods of his work on folk primary sources. Having entered the history of world music, fi rst of all, as a composer who paid great attention to folk music and promoted its use in Western European academic music, Bartok is guided by the principle of constant variability of folk melody, which he seeks to embody in the composition of rhapsodies. An audio recording by Jozsef Szigeti and Bela Bartok, made in 1940 in the USA, is used as a performance sample in musical analysis. The article summarizes the main musical characteristics of folk primary sources and concludes that it is necessary to take into account the nature of folk material in the performance interpretation of these pieces.
