Music and Time Annotation << Back Music of Latin America: Indigenism, Neofolklorism, Stravinsky V.R. Dotsenko The article proposes to trace the historical process of formation of indigenism – a specifi c direction of musical creativity, which refl ects the most remarkable features of the world perception of Latin Americans. From the sixteenth to the early nineteenth century, Latin American musical culture was overwhelmingly infl uenced by European infl uences. The formation of public consciousness took place against the background of the processes of ethno-cultural synthesis, in connection with which the work traces the evolution of views on Indian culture from complete denial to recognition of its formative role. By the beginning of the twentieth century, the musical culture of Latin America had reached maturity, as evidenced by the emergence of many signifi cant works that concentrated in themselves a clot of national character, which Latin America had not previously known. The pioneer in refl ecting the traditions of the Mexican Indians was C. Chavez, whose "Indian Symphony" is considered the standard of musical indigenism. In the works of Latin American composers, there was a steady tendency to create works in the direction of neofolclorism, in which elements of European, native American and African American music found an organic refraction. International recognition has reached such composers as Heitor Villa Lobos, A. Ginastera, M. Nobre. Outstanding contribution to the development of neofolklorism was made I.
