Music and Time Annotation << Back Touches to the Portrait of M.M. Ippolitov-Ivanov I.M. Romashchuk In the proposed article, the author reveals previously unknown materials from the "storehouse" of the creative heritage of M.M. Ippolitov-Ivanov. Their study made it possible to identify a number of promising ideas of the composer and get closer to the creative laboratory of the master. His student works in the class of N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov are considered for the first time. It is shown how the idiostyle of Ippolitov-Ivanov was formed, how the attitude to the word in music, to program compositions was manifested. The librettos of unrealized operas are presented, which opened the way to compositions with foreign subjects ("Azra", "Ole from Nordland", "The Last Barricade"), to images of the Russian East (symphonic suites "Caucasian Sketches", "Iveria", musical paintings "From the songs of Ossian"). The pages of unpublished articles-memoirs of Ippolitov-Ivanov about A.N. Ostrovsky, who significantly supplemented the libretto of the composer’s first opera "Ruth" and intended to create a text for the "folk opera" "The mill"; and about fleeting meetings with I.S. Turgenev idolized, whom the composer idolized, wrote a lyrical opera "Asya" based on his story and thought to reveal the plot of the writer's forgotten story "The Jew" in the opera genre. The composer's special interest in opera and vocal cycles is noted on the example of preserved fragments of the composition "From the life of a woman". In addition to archival sources, the author presents one of the fragments of the music of the well-known symphonic suite "Caucasian Sketches" by Ippolitov-Ivanov in the film "Dreams" by Japanese director Akira Kurosawa (1990). The method used by the author of the article can be called "selective", in connection with which individual episodes of the creative biography have subheadings. Keywords: M. Ippolitov-Ivanov, A.N.
