A.S. Stepanova
A typical seventies Russian and English composer, D.N. Smirnov left behind a rich legacy, not only musical but also poetic. His love of poetry and marques led him to meet one of the first outstanding poets, painters and engravers of English Romanticism, W. Blake. The subjects and images (mostly with religious overtones) did not just attract the Soviet composer, they opened up new possibilities for his creativity and for his life. Having created a whole series of works based on poems and watercolors by the English artist, Smirnov not only popularized his work, but also created his own view of his creations, his own methods of working with pictorial and poetic sources, and his own music, which set him apart from his contemporaries. The article is a tribute to the memory of D.N. Smirnov, who, thanks to W. Blake, created a rich music of Blake. Blake created a rich musical heritage, translated all his early poems and many works about him into Russian, created the first two operas based on his poems and even moved to England.
