Music and Time Annotation << Back "Advice to a Beginner to Play the Violin" by A.F. Lvov in the Context of the Musical Aesthetics of the Time T.B. Sukhanova The subject of the article is the methodical work "Advice to a Beginner to Play the Violin" (1859) by the domestic violinist, composer, a prominent musical and social figure of the 19th century, A.F. Lvov. The aim is to provide a contemporary evaluation of Lvov’s contribution to the development of music pedagogical thought based on the review of one of his works and to analyze the author's ideas from the perspective of the current trends in musical aesthetics of the first half of the 19th century. The article provides information on the history of Lvov's methodological work, defines its place among other similar works of the first half of the 19th century, summarizes its evaluation by the contemporaries (A.N. Serov, A.A. Bers) and reviewers of the Soviet period (L.N. Raaben, I.M. Yampolsky), defi nes its addressee and structure. In the context of the stated problematic, the life and activity stages of A.F. L’vov related to violin playing are briefly illuminated. The main attention in the article is paid to the consideration of two groups of problematic issues, the discussion of which is aimed at "Advice". The first are questions of didactic orientation: they include the problems of the natural abilities of the player, the comprehension of the technology of violin playing, the criteria of violin performance of the first half of the nineteenth century. The second group of questions is dedicated to the problems of musical-aesthetic order, including singing as a standard of violin sound, mutual influence of the tendencies of "academic" and virtuoso-romantic performing in the national violin art of the first half of the XIX century. The main achievements of A.F. Lvov’s work "Advice to a Beginner to Play the Violin" should be considered as follows: particular attention to the problem of giftedness in instrument pedagogic, determination of purposeful methods of violin playing and staging from the viewpoint of the time of work creation, revealing and fixation of stylistic regularities in Russian performing art of the first half of the XIXth century.
