The Problem of the Embodiment of Tchaikovsky’s Score "The Nutcracker" in the Ballet Theater |
L.E. Krasnova
The article tells about the relationship of the choreographers, who stage Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker”, with the music. The article raises the problem of the disclosure of the musical and fi gurative content of Tchaikovsky’s score in the ballet performance. Music of “The Nutcracker” is positioned as a very complicated material for the choreographers to uncover. Several productions of “The Nutcracker” are reviewed from this point of view, starting from Lev Ivanov’s ballet to the modern versions. Based on the material studied, the article offers the following theory: the most successful productions of “The Nutcracker” are those created by means of the classical dance as the classical choreography and Tchaikovsky’s symphony are conceptually close artistic phenomena. As the example of the productions which reveal the content of the music score the best way are named the ballets by V. Vainonen, Y. Grigorovich, P. Wright, A. Ratmansky. Also the article offers a short review of the other versions of “The Nutracker” – in avant-garde style and based on contemporary choreography.
Keywords: “The Nutcracker”, Tchaikovsky, music score, interpretation, ballet and music, ballet production, symphony, classical choreography.
