Music and Time Annotation << Back Transformations of the Military-Musician Service of the Russian Army During the Reforms of D.A. Milyutin 1860–1880 N.A. Ladyzhnikov The article is devoted to various changes and transformations that the military musician service underwent during the reforms of the Minister of War D.A. Milyutin. It examines the main decrees of Emperor Alexander II concerning the issues of recruitment and composition of military bands. The situation of the "Nikolaev" era, which required cardinal changes in all spheres of activity, is briefly described. The article also talks about the establishment of a single tuning fork in the entire army and the invention of the metronome used in military orchestras. The topic of inclusion in the compositions of new instruments created by Professor of the St. Petersburg Conservatory V. Wurm, as well as the results of these innovations, is touched upon. By analyzing the "Collection of regimental (counter) and historical marches of the Russian Army in the scores" by Otto von Freiman in 4 volumes, the quality of instrumentation of military marches of that time is considered.
