The article contains extensive information about the origin of the term leitmotif and its historical roots. The article details the application, manifestation and influence of leitmotifs in many art forms, especially in opera and operatic dramaturgy. Thanks to this article, we once again testify that leitmotifs play an important role in opera. The historical roots of the leitmotif go back to ancient times and are associated with various types of folklore. As is known, an extremely diverse conditional symbolism has developed in folk art. These are certain plastic gestures, movements, postures (for example, in Indian dances, etc.), facial expressions and masks in theatrical performances (ancient Greek theater, Kabuki theater, etc.), deeply conventional methods of depiction and color scheme in drawings (Japanese, Chinese folk painting), figurative symbolism in poetry (Japanese tanka, haiku), a system of a kind of musical labels in the folk theater, etc. At a certain historical stage, as V. Konen showed in the book "Theater and Symphony", many achievements of the theater passed into instrumental music, or somehow infl uenced it, in particular – leittematism and some features of its functioning.
