The article is devoted to the opera by the Moscow composer I.A. Kholopov, written by order of the Children’s Musical Theater named after N.I. Sats. Five fables of I.A. Krylova («Quartet», «Crow and Fox», «Two Dogs», «Cuckoo and Rooster», «Wolf and Lamb») served as the basis for the play «Krylov’s Fables, or Zoopera», which premiered on March 23, 2019. The libretto belongs to R.N. Sats - head of the literary and pedagogical part of the theater. «Zoopera» is the composer’s third musical stage work and his first opera for children. The operas «The Lesson» (Open Stage, 2014) and «The Blue Arrow Journey» (Cooperatsia Laboratory, performed at the Zaryadye Concert Hall, 2019) were previously written. The performance was positively received by young viewers and was highly appreciated by critics. Opera has many artistic merits, and one of its greatest strengths is its stylistic openness. The article presents an overview of the main works based on the works of the great fabulist (E.I. Fomin, K.A. Cavos, A.G. Rubinstein, V.I. Rebikov, A.T. Grechaninov, Ts.A. Cui, A.V. Tchaikovsky and others), analyzes the degree of compliance of the text of the libretto with the literary source, touches upon the issues of composition and dramaturgy.
