The Influence of Personal Performance Style on the Flow and Perception of Classical Violin Music Pieces
Li Hui

This study aims to investigate how personal performance styles affect the flow of the classical pieces of violin music and to evaluate this effect among different age groups of performers with varying skills and experience. The study presents a comparative analysis of classical music performances between three age groups (musicians aged 17-21, 22-35, and 36-60 years). The music pieces were written by Paul Norton, Henryk Wieniawski and Fritz Kleisler, and the analysis involved assessing the level of sound quality and individuality. The assessment procedure involved a specially assembled commission of teachers from music schools and conservatories, as well as an artifi cial intelligence (AI) bot, “How Bad Is Your Spotify?” The study traced how the quality level of classical music performance changed and how the level of individuality decreased along with it. From this one can conclude that for most of the participating professional musicians-teachers and the AI bot, the individuality of classical music performance equals to playing the classical piece of music wrong. Over the years of the existence of classical music, a standard system has emerged, which indicates how the classical music pieces should sound to translate ideas of the composer. Based on the results of the study, it can be said that personal performance styles are not in priority order when it comes to playing classical pieces of music. Future research should focus on the extent to which students in music schools and conservatories should shape their unique performance styles and determine ways towards them.
Keywords: assessment of performance skills, flow uniqueness, Paul Norton, Henryk Wieniawski and Fritz Kleisler, individuality formation, features of classical music.
