Music and Time Annotation << Back Features of the Harmonic language of Liszt in the Christian Sacraments: Confirmation and Eucharist M.L. Novikova The study of Franz Liszt’s legacy is often associated with stylistic problems and the harmonic language of his instrumental music, especially symphonic poems. Even monographic studies do not fully address the issue of the late period of Liszt’s work. The most relevant is music written in the tradition of church practice. In the center of the article are two parts from the "Seven Sacraments" cycle: Confirmation and the Eucharist. In each Sacrament, the believing Christian is imparted a certain gift of grace, characteristic of this Sacrament. In the aesthetics of the era of romanticism, the problem of church music became one of the main ones. It should correlate with the liturgical action, be ecclesiastical in spirit, encouraging believers to mercy and piety. The composer managed to abandon theatricality, the spectacle introduced into the temple was replaced by prayer. List assumed the independence of each part, but he combined all the Sacraments into an independent cycle. The composition testifies to the deep meditation of the Franciscan about the Sacraments of the Church. It seems interesting to trace how the master's romantic thinking conforms to the harmonious norms of the church musical style. The task of this work is to consider functional relationships, the intensity of the harmonic process, and the use of harmonic techniques.
