Music and Time Annotation << Back Pop-jazz Music in the Context of Thinking about Culture and Cultural Codes V.A. Esakov, V.A. Volobuev Pop-jazz culture is a layer of music based on the traditions of folk-pop-jazz vocal and instrumental improvisational features as the basis of its artistic and aesthetic life. In this article, pop-jazz culture is considered in the context of its «distant and close environment». By «distant environment» we mean the connection of pop-jazz music with such concepts as culture and cultural codes and by «close» – the relationship of pop-jazz music with social disciplines: history, cultural studies, religion, art history, musical art and others. Special attention is paid to revealing the peculiarities of pop-jazz music in the context of relations with the problems of culture as a whole, its material and spiritual components as well as the relationship of pop-jazz music with the codes of cultures: preliterate culture, its written tradition and the emerging screen culture. The conclusion is made that pop-jazz music is an organic element of the general process of genesis, connection and interconnection of preliterate, written and screen cultures.
