Music and Time Annotation << Back Issues in the Study of Small Mughams in Musical Heritage of Azerbaijan F.A. Safaraliyeva The article examines one of the professional genres of Azerbaijani music of the oral tradition – small mughams. The historical development of these mughams is revealed within the framework of a chronological analysis. The role of small mughams in the musical heritage of Azerbaijan is highlighted in various treatises and literary works starting from the 13th century to the present day. The main focus of the article is on the legacy of scholars, poets, and performers from the Middle Ages to this day. First of all, the information about small mughams found in the treatises of S. Urmevi, A. Maragai, A. Kovkebi, Mirza-bek, M.M. Navvab is considered. In addition, information about the mughams are mentioned in the poetic heritage of Nasimi, M. Sidgi, and G. Zakir. Further, the problem of small mughams is studied in the works and scientific studies written by U. Hajibeyli and subsequent generations of musicologists. The article traces the process of transformation from mugham-dastgah to small mugham or from the section of mugham-dastgah to small mugham. Information is provided on the musical scores of small mughams and the collections where they were printed, as well as on the sound recordings. Factual data are revealed, the names of famous singers are mentioned, whose voices have been recorded on gramophone records since the beginning of the last century. The article refl ects the results of the theoretical analysis of small mughams, highlights the problems that arise during their modal and melodic analysis.
