The genre of the Keyboard Batalia in the Works of Western European Composers of the late XVI–early XVIII Centuries |
E.V. Burundukovskaya
The article is devoted to the genre of clavier Battaglia, which was quite widespread in the clavier music of Western European composers of the late 16th and early 18th centuries. This genre is particularly interesting because it imitates the sounds of battle and the sound of such "military" instruments as trumpets, fanfares, bagpipes, flutes, drums, etc. The predecessor of the genre of clavier Battaglia was the vocal and instrumental Battaglia. One of the most famous examples of this kind of music is the polyphonic chanson "Battle of Marignano" by Clement Janequin. Other examples of clavier Battaglias can be found in the works of Italian, Spanish and Portuguese composers of the era. One of the Battaglias was written by the English composer W. Byrd. The article also explores the features of Spanish organs, for which a signifi cant number of prime examples of the genre have been written.
Keywords: battaglia, fanfares, bagpipes, organ stops, reed stops, W. Byrd, J.K.Kerll, P. de Araújo, J. Ximénez.
