Music and Time Annotation << Back On the Parallels in the Religious Music of the Doukhobors and Mennonites A.V. Kosykh This article compares the chants of the "psalms" of the Dukhobors and the hymns of the "old tradition" of the Mennonite sect. The study was made possible by the involvement of field and studio audio recordings of the "psalms" of the dukhobors of Javakheti, as well as the works of the Canadian scientist Wesley Berg, dedicated to the singing of Mennonites – descendants of immigrants from the colonies of the southern Russian Empire. The chants of the "psalms" and hymns reveal similar principles of compositional organization; it is possible to identify common intonation and rhythmic turns in the melodies; the singing style of the Dukhobors and Mennonites is very close. The historical facts concerning the contacts of the two sects show that the parallels revealed are not accidental: Anabaptism was one of the possible sources of the Dukhobor teachings, in addition, for more than twenty years the settlements of the Dukhobor People were adjacent to the Mennonite colonies in the Tauride province. Numerous facts of the material culture of the Dukhobors confi rm that the sectarians were not isolated from their neighbors-Mennonites, who were close in religious views, and they adopted a lot from them. This allows us to consider the chants of the Protestant sect of Dutch origin as one of the sources of the style of religious chants of the Doukhobors. Thus, this study complements the well-established scientific understanding of the relationship of the stylistic properties of "psalms" with folk songs and monodic Orthodox chants.
