Music and Time Annotation << Back Folklore – True and False V.A. Tsyrkov The question of folklore is traditionally discussed in a spectrum of opposing opinions. Some believe that folklore cannot exist outside of a particular tradition. Others consider it possible to revive the singing of village performers in an authentic form on the concert stage. Here we will try to determine the signs of authentic performance, and also identify the most important parameters of authenticity. The characteristic features of folklore – what distinguishes one performer from another or one tradition from another traditioncannot be a criterion of authenticity. Perhaps the mystery of identity lies in the search for algorithms that generate a living ripple of material. Then the question of authenticity would be appropriate to discuss not in relation to the performers, but from the point of view of authenticity. The line separating professional musicians from genuine performers would be somewhat blurred, and the apparent diversity of cultures would be perceived more completely.
