Music and Time Annotation << Back "Sofya Perovskaya": Last Joint Work of D.D. Shostakovich and L.O. Arnshtam K.Yu. Mikhaylov Soviet cinematography of the 1960s showed a lot of masterpieces and outstanding exam-ples of the cinema art. These are the films of Andrei Tarkovsky, Stanislav Rostotsky, Grigory Kozintsev, Eldar Ryazanov... Against the general background, the name of the director Leo Arnshtam fades away. His path to the cinema began in the 1930s, at the dawn of Soviet sound films, and ended in the late 1960s by the film "Sofya Perovskaya". It is also worth mentioning the role that Dmitry Shostakovich played in the life and work of Arnshtam. The composer not only worked a lot and closely with the director, but was also his close friend. Together they graduated from the piano department of the Petrograd Conservatory in 1923. The film "Sofya Perovskaya" was the last joint work of the two masters and one of the most interesting examples of cinematography of its time. The general "tone", the color of the film, and, of course, the relationship between cinematic and musical means deserve special attention here.
