Byeongwon Ha An Origin of Interactive Art: Nam June Paiks Progressive Musical Instruments // Proceedings of the 22nd International Symposium on Electronic Art ISEA. 2016. Hong Kong. Р. 286–289
A.N. Lipov

The American-Korean artist Nam June Pike (1932–2006) is primarily known as a pioneer of video art, although he spent quite a long time studying music and began his studies in music as a classical pianist. The artist developed an experimental artistic practice aimed at humanizing technological experience, building bridges between music, performance, sculpture, technology, video and installation, created numerous avantgarde installations consisting of TV sets, invented a synthesizer that allowed manipulating electronic images and sound in real time and made the first video collages. At the same time Pike’s interest in avant-garde music has been at the center of his experimental artistic practice since the early stages of his work. Being influenced by instrumental innovations in the work of composer John Cage and his ideas of using everyday sounds and noises in music composition, and basing his musical ideas on background music – the fi eld of acoustic sounds that are not traditional in musical performance, Pike became an inventor of new possibilities in using musical instruments and musical sounds to create interactive art, creating new genre and style forms of video art. The translation of the scientifi c article explores the multifaceted history of Nam June Pike’s early interactive works during a period when he studied musicology and composition in Germany and wrote several articles about new music that still remain unexplored material for both Korean and Western scholars.
Keywords: interactive arts, video art, Nam June Pike, John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, music performance, random music, action music, «Urmusik», «Klavier Integral».
