"Macrocosmos I" and "Macrocosmos II" by George Crumb: Phenomena of Human Life |

The article presents an analysis of one of the iconic works of the 20th century – the piano supercycle «Macrocosmos» by George Krum. The main content components of each of the plays of the first two cycles – «Macrocosmos I» and «Macrocosmos II»; the main conclusions are made that at the figurative-meaningful level they become a diptych, which reveals the main problems of human evolution – from the origin of life to today’s apocalyptic moments. The main diptych of Krum under consideration was Cosmos. Cycles I and II of his «Macrocosmos» (each of them has a subtitle: «Twelve Fantasy Pieces» and is divided by the composer into 3 parts) are devoted to showing individual phenomena of human life and humanity as a whole. Variants of performance of works, their forms and features of the musical language are considered in context.
