Music and Time Annotation << Back Romantic forever. To the 140th anniversary of N.K. Medtner A.I. Demchenko N. Medtner (1869/1870–1951) was a member of the magnificent meeting of composers-pianists, which Russia presented to the world at the end of the XIX century – along with Metner, it is A.Scriabin (1871–1915) and S. Rachmaninoff (1873–1943). Entering the composer's field and having before him such already recognized musicians as Scriabin and Rachmaninoff, Medtner from the first step entered the world of big music with his range of themes and images – meaning the significant for him opus 1 «Eight picturesmoods ». And later, unlike Scriabin and Rachmaninoff, he wrote only for the piano or with the piano, invariably remaining a knight of the piano. Similarly, Medtner can be considered a knight of the piano sonata genre: 14 works, which quantitatively exceeds what Scriabin (10) and Prokofiev (9). The most important aspect of Medtner’s music is its undoubtedly romantic essence, and he is almost entirely in the aesthetic and stylistic dimension of the turn of the twentieth century. Truly romantic was the pronounced personal accent of his music, and, perceiving the world of personality, outlined in the works of Medtner, it is easy to conclude that it fully meets our ideas about the «silver age» of the turn of the twentieth century – therefore, this composer, like no other, was a true knight of the «silver age». Among the defining facets of Metner’s romanticism there is elegy, heroic and dramatic imagery and what is traditionally associated with the anacreontics in poetry.
