Norwegian Traditional Music Performers in the Middle of the 19th Century from the Perspective of L.M. Lindeman’s Fieldwork Research |
A.G. Ostapenko
The article focuses on Norwegian music performers who disseminated folk music traditions and cooperated with Ludvig Mathias Lindeman (1812–1887), an outstanding folklore collector and society and music figure, in the middle of the 19th century. Information about folk singers and performers is preserved in the folklorist’s fieldwork manuscripts, in his official travel reports that he sent from Norwegian provinces, in the introductions to the collections of arranged folk melodies. The documents listed have served as the basement for a number of publications produced in Norway in the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century which show that there is a growing interest in folk musicians of the past. The author summarises information about these musicians as it is available in publications devoted to the early stage of collecting Norwegian folk music, and also presents the results of reconstructing biographies of Norwegian folk performers who lived and worked in the middle of the 19th century. The main purpose of the research is to reveal and describe the collecting methods L.M. Lindeman used in communicating with people in rural areas.
