Music and Time Annotation << Back Unknown Arensky: the composer’s work at Russian choir society and Court chapel A.M. Gorshkova The article is dedicated to insufficiently explored facts from the biography of outstanding Russian composer Anton. S. Arensky (1861–1906), whose main creative activity came at the end of the 19th - at the beginning of the 20th century. Nowadays he is known mainly as a professor of the Moscow conservatory, who had taught a lot of famous composers and the author of theoretical treatises which have been used until present. But his work as the head of the Russian choir society and the manager of the Court Chapel was equally important. In both institutions theoretical training of the musicians was in the focus of the composer as well as advance of their performing skills. Due to his reforms the Russian choir society began to take part in the concerts given by the Imperial Russian Musical Society. Also in the article are for the first time named all Arensky’s spiritual compositions, which made significant contribution in Russian church music of the time.
