Music and Time Annotation << Back The Music World of S.E. Feinberg’s Sonatas of the 1910–1920s as a Reflection of the Social and Cultural Context of the Era R.G. Shitikova The article is devoted to the works by prominent composer and pianist S.Ye. Feinberg. The author affirms that piano music in general and, the sonata genre in particular, prevail in Feinberg’s heritage. The article designates the artist's reaction to the most important events of the period. The inclusiveness of his search in the social and cultural and proper musical context of the 1910–1920-s is revealed. The author states the links between the contents of the sonatas created during this period and current problems of that time. Particular attention is paid to the stylistic origin of the composer’s musical language. The article emphasizes the impact on composer’s formation by Scriabin that determined the most important trends in the development of musical art of the twentieth century. The distinctiveness of the individual manner of the author's script is shown. The Sixth Sonata is analyzed in detail as Feinberg’s vertex achievement in this genre and as a work that most fully reflects the “thunderous atmosphere” of those years. The article proves that the complex intersection of extra- and intramusical factors generates semantics, imagery, emotional tone and powerful ex-pressive potential of Feinberg’s piano sonatas.
