Music and Time Annotation << Back Russian Musical Art in Scientifi c and Critical Heritage by Mikhail Gnessin M.A. Karachevskaya The article deals with the scientific and critical works of M.F. Gnessin, dedicated to the problems of Russian musical art of the XIX–XX centuries. Special attention is paid to the Gnessin’s most important research which are considered in the light of scientific trends of the beginning of the 20th century. The article «"Internationalism" and Russian Music» reflect discussions about the ways of development of Russian musical art in 1900–1910 years (denatiolization process). Gnessin’s research «On the Nature of Musical Art and Russian Music» deals with basic categories of musical «being»: essence of the piece of art, musical properties, musical time and musical space, movement and rest, and others. In the cycle of essays «On Russian Symphonism (Epic Symphonism and Epic Musical Stage Dramaturgy)» Gnessin attracts Soviet musicologist’s attention to the historical type of epic symphonism in «The Mighty Handful» composer’s works.
