Music and Time Annotation << Back Some Features of Morphogenesis in Symphonic Works by Claude Debussy ("Afternoon of the Faun", "Nocturnes") S.M. Kolbasova The article examines the forming features in Debussy’s symphonic works of his early and middle period. They are disclosed in the development of different principles the main of which is variant ostinato. The articles provide the reader with musical examples from Debussy’s works expressing these distinctive techniques. Taking into consideration the great role of the rational element in Debussy’s works, the author found it possible (at the most general level) to draw parallels between Debussy’s music and the art of the Middle Ages, defining his type of thinking as canonical and close to that very epoch (e.g. its thematical model, the variant-variational methods of music development). But Debusy`s music pays tribute to the stylistic trend of his time called impressionism. Debussy’s innovations in the field of formation found its reflection in the musical language of the 20th century in O. Messiaen’s works.
